ITALIAN INDUSTRY OF SHOE, LEATHERGOODS AND TANNING MACHINERY MANUFACTURERS


The Italian industry of footwear, leathergoods and tanning machinery manufacturers is a productive sector that gathers about 350 small and medium-sized companies and boasted in 2007 an overall turnover of about 498,80 millions Euros. The export is more than 350 millions euro.

Most of the companies producing traditional footwear and leathergoods machineries are located in Lombardy (especially in Vigevano) but other productive centres are located in Tuscany and in the Marches. Companies manufacturing machines and equipments for sport shoes are mostly located in Veneto, in particular in the area around Padua, and in Varese (Lombardy).

The sector of footwear machineries exports about 70% of its production and in 2007 its main markets have been: China, India, Turkey, Rumania, Spain and Tunisia.

The Italian industry of footwear and leathergoods machineries, developed during the 50’s, is a world-wide leader; indeed, more than the 50% of all footwear and leathergoods machineries all over the world are made in Italy.

The tanning machinery sector is world-wide leader as well; more than the two thirds of the world production is manufactured in Italy and includes about 80 companies, primarily located in Tuscany, Veneto, Lombardy, Piedmont and Campania.
The tanning machinery sector exports most of its production and the main markets in 2007 were: China, India, Brazil, Turkey and Argentina.


ASSOMAC is the association which gathers - at national level – the companies manufacturing machineries and accessories for footwear leathergoods and tanning companies. It also safeguards their interests by promoting this productive sector all over the world.
