It’s official: Sweden to join NATO

27 February 2024

After yesterday's favourable vote by the Hungarian parliament, Sweden will officially join NATO.

As Politico writes, Russia's invasion of Ukraine prompted the Scandinavian country to abandon its decades-long military non-alignment and move closer to the world's largest military alliance.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán delayed approving Stockholm's application for over 600 days. Now that all current NATO allies have ratified Sweden's membership status, a flag-raising ceremony will be held at NATO headquarters in Brussels later this week, less than a year after Finland joined the alliance.
